1840 is when the region began its vine growing history, however it was not until the 1970’s that the real regional revival began.

Vineyards are typically small and steep and hand pruning and picking is often necessary and as a result the region boasts an international reputation as producing some of Australia’s most elegant cool climate wines, renown for their finesse and varietal intensity The region produces the more classic Champagne style sparkling table wines from its Chardonnay and Pinot Noir, however talented vine-growing and winemaking produce excellent Cabernet Sauvignon, Franc, Shiraz and Merlot, as well as increasing varieties from the cooler regions of Europe.

Dining options in the Hills range from local country hotel to award winning winery restaurant fare, the focus often being on ‘loca vore’, with chefs sourcing ingredients from the local gardens and orchards.
