Heading 4 hours south from Adelaide finds us in the middle of the Coonawarra region and its sub regions, famous for its ‘Terra Rossa” soil; one of the worlds highly regarded and prized wine growing mediums.
This precious iron rich and red cigar shaped terroir, a raft of clay over porous white limestone fed by underground water, has become some of the most prized vine growing land in the country. The region, blessed with mild seasonal weather where nights are cool, is acknowledged as producing some of the country’s most premium Cabernet Sauvignon.
It was the vision of John Riddoch, in 1890, which has ensured that the spirit of the Coonawarra has endured. This tradition kept alive by a collection of world-class wineries is presided over by a new generation of wine-making families.
Today, this appellation is not only renowned for its signature Cabernets, but also produces class leading Shiraz, Chardonnay and Riesling. The journey from Adelaide through the scenic South Eastern region makes this tour an unforgettable experience.
